U.S. International Grantmaker Meeting (Chicago, December 8th, 2005)

Notes on Proceedings Now Available

The Council on Foundations International Programs Department convened a one-day meeting focused on the U.S. International Grantmaking Project (USIG), which seeks to facilitate responsible and effective international grantmaking by easing legal, administrative and informational barriers. Held in Chicago on December 8th, 2005, the meeting was attended by more than 40 international grantmaking leaders, program officers, grants administrators, board members, legal advisors, and affinity groups from across the country.

The purpose of the gathering was to review the accomplishments of the USIG Project to date and to explore how to address, more effectively, current and anticipated challenges to international grantmaking. Significant progress has already been been made since the project was conceived in 1996, notably the wealth of legal and practical information now available on this website as well as clarification of certain IRS rules. However, there is clearly more that needs to be done, both to develop this website further and to tackle outstanding issues facing international grantmakers.

Input from the recent December 8th meeting in Chicago is already being incorporated into the USIG strategic planning process. Summarized notes from this meeting may be accessed here (in PDF).
